Why your CPF LIFE payout number alone tells you nothing

Every year, the CPF Board sends Singaporeans a projected monthly payout. Most people look at that number — say, $1,780/month — and feel either relieved or vaguely worried, but aren't sure which. The number is meaningless without context.

The CPF Board's official estimator tells you what you'll receive. It cannot tell you whether that's enough for your lifestyle — that requires knowing your actual expenses, inflation, savings, and additional income. That's what this calculator does.

The 2026 CPF changes that affect your retirement

The CPF salary ceiling reached its final level of $8,000/month in 2026. The retirement age has risen to 64 while the CPF LIFE payout age remains 65 — a gap requiring planning. The ERS was set at three times the BRS, unlocking a maximum monthly payout of approximately $3,440.

How the emergency buffer works

This calculator always sets aside 24 months of projected expenses as an untouchable emergency buffer. For retirees, unexpected medical costs are the single biggest financial risk most retirement calculators ignore entirely.

BRS, FRS, ERS — which tier are you on?

BRS (~$110,200) — suitable if you own property. Payout: ~$890/month. FRS ($220,400) — the default standard. Payout: ~$1,780/month. ERS (~$330,600) — maximum top-up tier. Payout: ~$3,440/month.

Frequently asked questions

Is this endorsed by the CPF Board?
No. This is an independent tool. CPF figures are based on CPF Board announcements for 2026. Always verify your personal figures at cpf.gov.sg.
Why does it show comfort strategies when I'm well-funded?
If your savings runway extends past age 90 or your income covers expenses, the calculator shifts to comfort and protection strategies — how to spend confidently, protect against medical costs, and ensure your estate is in order.
How is "safe monthly spend after 65" calculated?
Safe monthly spend after 65 = total monthly income (CPF LIFE + any extra income) + (investable savings divided by 360 months). Investable savings = total savings minus the 24-month emergency buffer.
Should I defer my CPF LIFE payout to age 70?
Each year you defer past 65 increases your payout by ~7%. Deferring the full 5 years = up to 35% more — permanently, at no cost. Best if you have other savings or income to fund the 65–70 gap. Break-even is typically around age 78–80.
What inflation rate should I use?
Singapore's core inflation has averaged 2–3% over the past decade. The default of 2.5% is a reasonable estimate. For healthcare-heavy expenses, consider 4–5% since medical costs rise faster than general inflation.
